Children of Men
Posted On 04/26/2008 21:11:11 by Mercenary
The movie Children of Men has made me cry. I still believe that abortion should be legal, but I'm sad so many babies are being born out of neglect, abuse, and often, without love. The world can stand still for one person. No one in my mind has made that sort of impression on me since Ghandi, buddhists self-immolating, etc. But those things were done before I was born. In my world, I live behind academic glass, where only these very short, but powerful moments are captured on film by directors and writers who have a vision.

I see and feel something evoked, but so little seems to be tangible for me to actually touch.

I walk away from the movie theater, and proceed with the regurgitated cycle of daily existence. Personal choice to live behind academia before I'm thrown out to the real world.

Sometimes I thank academia for sheltering me, for opening my mind, but I also rue how we discuss, talk, write about, think about in a class room, inside buildings, somewhere on campus. Very isolated, endemic, stifled amongst ourselves. We are a small voice because we think big, but actions...we might as well be the dead fish who flow with the stream.
My contributions for the world have fed people and helped them, but in a way that only postpones death, or feeds one fish to a bear who needs to eat twenty. Mother Teresa said if you cannot feed fifty people, feed one. I did, and it was a long time ago.

I dislike how the world I live in needs a college degree to validate my opinion, experiences in the real world, advice, and knowledge. People will make up bullshit and speak the truth no matter what sort of degree you have. And let me add that the real world no longer accepts bachelor's degrees, the bar has been set to a minimum of master's, as competition is increasing, the economy is getting worse, and more people are going to college.

In turn, most people enjoy luxury. the brand names associated with them have found to play the game of affordable luxury, of course, compromising the quality and tradition of what made the brand name so famous....more people want the school degree and the brand name to pervade and define their lifestyle. I cannot keep up and watch myself falling very far behind in the race of chasing our tails.
