Capitals and Lowercases in Pronouns
|
I rarely even think about it anymore.
I was reading a thread in a forum about how one particular Mistress capped Her pronouns and was bashed for it, but who simply let the insults roll off Her back.
This caused Me to reflect on the fact that I cap My pronouns as well (specifically "Me" and "My"). It all started when I first began playing in BDSM chatrooms about 10 years ago. I was taught that this is simply online BDSM etiquette. Dominants cap their pronouns, and submissives lowercase theirs. Since then, it has just become a habit, as well as a preference. Not that I need it for any reason, but I simply like it.
When I discuss other Dominants, I cap their pronouns as well. If I am in a one-on-one conversation with a Dominant, I will either cap us both, or I will make a conscious effort to type vanilla.
Usually, I don't even have to tell submissives to do it (cap Mine, lowercase theirs). They see that I do it, and out of respect, they do it, too. If a certain subbie doesn't do it, I won't tell him to, unless I think he particularly needs a lesson in humility and respect.
Most times, I will cap all female titles (such as Goddess, Mistress, Woman, and Lady). This is because I truly believe that Women have the ultimate power, and that it might as well be expressed in writing.
*shrugs* Just a thought. It seems that a lot of Dommes aren't even doing this anymore. Nobody seems to comment on the fact that I do it, and I hope that is because it seems as natural to them as it does to Me.
